The shareholder mindset.

If you really want to have a more flexible life as a business owner you need to switch from an owner operator to the mindset of a Shareholder / Investor. Most business owners never achieve such a state as they believe that they will always be critical to the success of their company. In many cases this is true, however it does not mean things cannot be changed.

This can take time, but its not impossible, as long as you are prepared to implement the systems and processes to turn your business into an operating system which can be managed by others, ideally by members of your existing team. Most business owners do a multitude of tasks and most can be delegated to others with the appropriate training.

Sometimes it takes an outsider to come into your business to help you implement such measures as they will view your business with a different lens. However by working together you can changes things for the better very quickly. Remember, just because you have done something in a particular way for twenty years, does not mean it cannot be improved. More importantly your team may welcome the changes you have not had the time to implement which results in better motivation and staff retention over the long term.
